For many supporters of the contract, this move is a reminder to people of the purpose of the internet – a global public resource which respects civil discourse and human dignity. The Magna Carta for the Web comes at an opportune time as many countries have began censorship of potentially subversive content, and data privacy concerns in social media networks have been raised in recent months.
The contract will be published in full in May 2019, timed perfectly to mark the period when half of the world’s population is expected to have access to the internet.
