In this July 1, 2022 article for Reclaim the Net, Ken Macon reports on a new algorithm developed by researchers at the University of Chicago which is capable of predicting future crime, a week in advance.
The researchers tested the algorithm in several cities, including Chicago, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Austin, Atlanta, and Detroit. It was 90% accurate within a range of 1,000 feet.
Ishanu Chattopadhyay, lead author of the report published in Nature, says that despite its accuracy, the tool should not be used as a guide to law enforcement policy. He says, “you can use this as a simulation tool to see what happens if crime goes up in one area of the city, or there is increased enforcement in another area. If you apply all these different variables, you can see how the systems evolve in response”.
Editor’s Note: We commend the researchers for stating that the new algorithm they have developed is merely a tool and should not be used as the sole basis for arrests and law enforcement policies. We sincerely hope that the police heed this warning.
