While many AI pioneers have been going on and on about the need to humanize AI, many have forgotten that there is another “being” we need to consider – the environment. With the threat of climate change knocking on our doors, this is perhaps a topic that is as important the alignment challenge.
This research report released by the Environmental Law Institute discusses the potential environmental impacts of AI, and the various forms of governance that can be applied to ensure that AI will be deployed in a manner that is beneficial to the environment. It also puts forth some design recommendations for programmers, companies, and governments to consider.
