Google’s new research proclaims that its AI system can outperform human experts at finding breast cancers on mammograms, but for Wired author Christie Aschwanden, this development isn’t such a huge win for health care.
Aschwanden says that the benefit of machine-enabled health care will all depend on how the technology is used, as well as the questions we seek to answer with each new technology developed.
Existing data shows that cancer diagnosis is already suffering from pre-existing problems such as overtesting, overdiagnosis, and overtreatment. For Ascwander, Google’s AI will only serve to amplify mistakes in this field, instead of actually addressing the root cause of the problem.
