In this November 2020 article for The Guardian, Alex Hern reports on Apple’s plan to launch the App Tracking Transparency (ATT), a new privacy feature for its devices that will enable users to know what data apps are tracking. In a letter to privacy coalition groups, Apple’s director for global privacy, Jane Horvath says, “We developed [App Tracking Transparency] for a single reason: because we share your concerns about users being tracked without their consent and the bundling and reselling of data by advertising networks and data broker”.
Apple’s plan has received push back from Facebook and other advertising companies as it will enable users to refuse permission for data collection, hence harming their inability to personalize advertisements.
Editor’s Note: Will this new Apple feature allow us to bypass Facebook’s intrusive data collection? Or is this a way for Apple to cut its competition?
